The story of the Swanley New Barn Miniature Railway, celebrating its first thirty-five years
Description
An iconic miniature railway
Swanley is an outer suburb of southeast London, technically part of Kent, a major railway junction and on the notorious M25 motorway. In the 1980s, the council decided to turn various chunks of green-belt-land north of the town into a country park, and the various attractions that gravitated there included a miniature railway, first privately owned, then taken over by the council, and now run very successful by a society of volunteers. It’s a long line, and what you might call ‘chunky 7.25″ inch gauge’ – tough and rugged for a busy commercial life, with a very impressive stable of locomotives
