The story of the spectacularly potty ‘Emett’ railway at the 1951 Festival of Britain
Description
More of an artwork than a railway
The 1951 Festival of Britain is remembered fondly by the British public for all sorts of reasons, but one of the favourite attractions at the Battersea Park end of the Festival was the Far Ottering & Oyster Creek Railway. Artist Roland Emett was asked to translate his popular cartoons of a fictional anarchic railway into reality, and with the help of showman and engineer Harry Barlow, he succeeded. There is surprisingly little written about this icon of the modern age, but author Graham Bessant brings together maps, plans and most of the known photographs
