£1.43
This is an awful lot of magazine for a mere £1.43! Two remarkable, but very different lines – Coniston and Packer’s Hill – both still running then, but very much on borrowed time. Plus a visit to the Bickington Steam Railway at the Trago Mills store near Newton Abbot, and a trip to the Plowmans Railway near Christchurch in Dorset to see the relocated Dobwalls Collection before the locos went overseas
Description
The Bickington Steam Railway
This line at Trago Mills near Newton Abbot is one of the best commercial 10.25″ lines, but not widely known. Lots of twists, turns, tunnels and bridges, plus a very rare 10.25″ light controlled road crossing and some classic locomotives.
The Packer’s Hill Railway
Patrick Henshaw’s charming 1/4-mile agricultural tramway in deepest, darkest rural Dorset, complete with rickety bridges, switchback track and endless entertainment
The Dobwalls Locomotives at Plowmans
Dobwalls had closed by this time, but the unique locomotive collection looked safe with a new owner in Bournemouth. The planning authority had other ideas.
Coniston Miniature Railway
I wish we’d gone to see it while it was still operating, but at least we have this photographic record of Major John Hext’s most unusual miniature railway in the heart of the English Lake District. Article by Mark Hambly.
