Quite by chance, almost everything in this issue was 10.25″ gauge, from Coniston in the Lake District down to Margate in Kent
Description
Margate Pier & Payton Heights
Margate has no miniature railways today, but it has seen four very different railways over the years.
Coniston Miniature Railway
One of those weird dream-like railways but it really existed, the work of Major Hex at his home Holywath near Coniston in Cumbria. It was a complex 10.25-inch gauge, with a priceless collection of locomotives, and lots of signals and junctions – the major’s special passion. Sadly, this article covers the last days of operation and sale of the line, but at least we have it recorded.
South Downs
A club railway that’s also a popular and successful commercial line. The story of the construction and evolution of this fascinating line.
