Next Stop Seaton! 66 years of Modern Electric Tramways Ltd

Like many West Country railway branch lines, the Seaton line closed in the 1960s, and everyone thought that was that. It wasn’t iconic like the Ffestioniog, or close to a major centre of population like the Severn Valley Railway, and no iconic structures – it ran gently down a pleasant valley to the little seaside town of Seaton

Modern Electric Tramways
This is where things get a bit ‘miniature’. Tram enthusiasts Claude Lane and Allan Gardner needed a permanent home for their collection of 1/2 and 2/3rds-scale trams and settled on the lower reaches of the old Seaton branch line. Eventually – and after a long battle with the authorities to cross the A3052 main road at Colyford, the tramway had reached Colyton, almost all the way to the main line. It won’t ever get there because Seaton Junction station closed 40 years ago and with no immediate population, it is unlikely to come back… well, never say never. Not cheap, but an absolutely fascinating story, and a big (A4) book with lots of rare and unusual photographs. This  is the enlarged and revised fourth edition, published early in 2019.
